Meet the Team

Karen Cooper-Haber Ph.D, LMFT-S, LPC-S

  • Throughout my early career, as I engaged with adolescents across various environments, it became increasingly clear to me the profound impact that family and other supportive systems have in facilitating significant and enduring change. My journey led me to work within several school settings, where I was able to design and implement systemic interventions. These included not only family therapy and school-based interventions, but also community outreach and service learning opportunities. Looking for ways to enhance the services to students and families in schools, I developed partnerships with graduate level programs and universities training master's and Ph.D. level clinicians in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), school counseling and mental health.

Since retiring from the schools, I have been able to devote myself to a full-time private practice in collaboration with a vibrant group of dedicated clinicians. Our collective energy and commitment to fostering positive outcomes breathe life into our practice. Here, my focus remains on individuals, couples, and families, encouraging the integration of resources within therapy sessions or through the exploration of genograms and family of origin issues. I've come to deeply appreciate the dual nature of families as sources of both harm and healing.

In my practice, I offer both individual and group supervision for clinicians on their path to LPC and LMFT licensure, as well as Supervisors in training. My approach is deeply rooted in the belief in the transformative power of resilience, humor, trial and error, and the exploration of new pathways to recovery. I commit a significant part of myself to the work of my clients, ready to walk beside them as they need and to champion their independence and strength once they've found it.

  • Throughout our lives, we accumulate memories and experiences that shape us. Often, what we truly need is space—space to breathe, to process, and simply to exist. In the realm of therapy, I often liken the process to a journey: you are at the helm, navigating through life's complexities, while I sit beside you, map in hand. This map may not always be necessary, but it is crucial to remember that we traverse this path together. My approach to therapy is integrative, employing a diverse array of techniques tailored to support individuals grappling with anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, and other multifaceted challenges. Our sessions are anchored in compassion, mindfulness, radical acceptance, and the joint exploration of personal values, all within a supportive and nonjudgmental environment.

My academic background from the University of South Carolina, coupled with my experience in private practice settings, has afforded me the privilege of working with a broad spectrum of clients, enriching my understanding and approach to therapy. I have a particular focus on adolescents, adults, and enjoy collaborative work with colleagues to provide therapy for couples and families.

The journey towards self-discovery and understanding one's needs is a profound one, warranting both time and patience. I hold immense respect for each client's process of selecting a therapist who resonates with them. Should I not be the right fit for your therapeutic journey, I am more than willing to facilitate connections with the highly skilled and compassionate clinicians at Carolina Family Wellness Collaborative, ensuring you find the support tailored to your unique needs.

  • I place great importance on the therapeutic relationship, viewing it as a foundational element of your healing journey. Our interaction is designed to offer a comfortable and secure environment for addressing emotional challenges. It also provides a supportive base from which you can safely explore and adapt to new changes and experiences. I am committed to accompanying you on this path.

You might be navigating through relational conflicts, overwhelmed by or actively avoiding certain thoughts and emotions, or perhaps you find yourself repeating patterns that no longer contribute positively to your life. Change, while daunting and often uncomfortable, opens the door to personal growth and healing. As your therapist, my role is to provide guidance and support as you navigate through and beyond these challenging experiences, helping you to not only savor life's beautiful moments but also to develop resilience in the face of adversity.

In our sessions, a primary goal is often the reduction of symptoms to enhance your daily life. Once symptoms are managed, our focus typically shifts towards uncovering and understanding the origins of these issues. This exploration may involve processing past events, reevaluating self-perceptions, and healing relationships, including the one you have with yourself.

Myself and the CFCW team are here to partner with you throughout this process.
